Wow, what a month January has been! My main New Years resolution is to be more organized, balancing work, volunteering, time with my husband, family, and friends, while preparing for the upcoming state pageant! I think January was a great kick-off to this!
The beginning of January started off with a visit with Governor Jack Markell and Senator Tom Carper. What a great opportunity to meet with two individuals who truly care about Delaware. Governor Jack Markell even shared a common interest with me of Krav Maga! (Israeli Self-Protection, which my husband teaches) I really enjoyed this experience and appreciate that they took time from their busy schedules to meet with us and get to know about us and the pageant a little better.

January is the month of Miss America, so of course as any other good pageant gal will do, I had a Miss America get together with a good friend. We cheered on Maria Cahill from home (no Vegas this year!), who won Miss Delaware back in June. I had the pleasure of helping Maria prepare for her state pageant, as her local title was Miss Rehoboth Beach, which my very good friend Marisa Erdman produced. As a volunteer for the Miss Delaware Scholarship Organization, it is amazing to see the work these ladies do, and I was so proud of Maria! I am looking forward to helping Marisa with our new local titleholders this year!
This month, my husband hosted a blood drive at his business Premier Martial Arts. Miller-Keystone Blood Center is a non-profit community organization that serves as the only blood provider to 24 hospitals in the Pennsylvania and New Jersey area. They set up shop in our karate studio, along with WMMR radio station to promote the event. I spent the day helping out where I could, even a Duncan Donuts run for the volunteers and medical staff!
I knew that giving blood was probably one of the best acts of volunteerism I could do, however, I was a little scared, since I never did it before. But I did, and I survived and it felt so good to do something so important. Did you know that one single blood donation can save up to three lives and it only takes one hour of your time? I encourage everyone to be a hero and give blood.
January closed with two fun events which I attended. The first was the Spark 8 VIP Party. Spark is a weekly newsletter that gives people all the hot events that are going on in Delaware that week. I was fortunate enough to be a cover model for one of the issues this past year, and as a thank you was given a VIP pass to the party. The photo shoot was so much fun! I had an opportunity to work with a great photographer, get my make-up done and feel like a star that day! The party was a blast too, and all the covers were featured. I hope to have another opportunity to work with Spark again this year!

The next night, I had the pleasure of attending the Tom Foolery's has Heart Fundraiser. This event was hosted by my friend Melissa Schulte, Mrs. Delmarva 2012 and she did a FANTASTIC job! I just heard that the event raised over $1000 for the 2012 Heart Ball, which benefits the American Heart Association. I had a great time and had an opportunity to spend some time with some college friends and pageant sisters. Great job Melissa!!
Oh, this just in! I was featured in an advertisement for my gym, Anytime Fitness! I have been working with my trainer Michael Shaw in preparation for the pageant, and they wanted to share some of my successes with their members and potential clients. I feel like a celebrity at the gym and this is great motivation! I am looking forward to working with Michael the next coming months to take my fitness routine to the next level!
