I volunteered at the 3rd Annual Delaware Victims’ Rights Task Force “One Step at a Time 5K”, which was held at the Riverfront in Wilmington, Delaware. The Delaware Victims' Rights Task Force is made up of people who work in the criminal justice arena (police, prosecution, compensation) and at social service agencies with victims and survivors of violent crime in the state of Delaware. The DVRTF strives to improve the response to victims of violent crime, bring awareness to victim rights and supports prevention efforts to end violence.
It was a gorgeous day for a 5K run! I helped at the
registration table, getting pre-registered runners checked in and giving them
their race numbers, timing chips, and t-shirts for the event. I also helped
with giving out water to the runners and breaking down the event. The One Step
at a Time 5K’s purpose is to promote, educate, and bring public awareness to
National Crime Victims Rights week, which is the week of April 22-28th. All of the
proceeds benefit the Delaware Center for Justice and I was happy to contribute
my time towards helping with such a great cause, which relates to my platform,
“Stay Aware, Stay Safe”.

I had an opportunity to meet some great individuals at this event. Service Mark, which provides heating, cooling, and plumbing services, sponsored this event and provided water bottles to all of the participants. B101 radio was there to play music and pump up the participants at the event, and I had an opportunity to meet their mascot, Buzzbee! Bio-Tec Emergency Services was also a sponsor. They provide services to help clean up hazardous materials at crime scenes and provide a safe environment. Timothy’s Riverfront Grill provided a great post race party with refreshments for the awards ceremony.

I was also honored to meet Delaware Attorney General, Beau
Biden. Mr. Biden welcomed all of the participants before the run started and he
ran as well. I also had a great
opportunity to educate some of the participants on my platform “Stay Aware,
Stay Safe”.
