During the holiday season hearts are overflowing with generosity and the spirit of giving permeates the air. All many of us can think about is the frenzy of shopping, attending holiday concerts or partaking in other festive activities.
In an effort to recapture the true meaning of this holiday season, I, along with fellow pageant sister Heather Baker, Mrs. Middletown US 2012 and the reigning Miss Atlantic Coast, Becky Albini visited a group home in Townsend, Delaware to spread a little holiday cheer to some folks who are in need. As a part of Connections Community Support Programs; a Delaware 501(c)(3), we participated in the Annual Christmas Tree Project. We took the tree and all the trimmings and holiday snacks to the site and hosted a tree trimming party for the eight residents. The delight on the faces of the residents when we put up the tree and began passing out the ornaments was priceless. The energy in the home was so festive and it was great to see people who probably don’t feel like they have a reason to smile beaming with excitement.
There are so many opportunities to help others in the community, especially during the holiday season, but I think ‘how’ you give back really makes a big difference. Making donations of gifts and money to worthy causes is extremely important, but when you can put a smile on someone’s face and spend quality time with them there’s an impact beyond words.
I felt honored and a part of something special today. It’s moments like this when I gain a new appreciation for the gifts that I have in my life. Each of us has been blessed with the gifts of time, talent and energy and all it takes is a little bit to spread some holiday cheer this season.
