Sharing Smiles at Easter Seals

Nationwide, as many as 54 million Americans have a disability. This hits close to home for me as my mother was left partially paralyzed after suffering a stroke in 1998. I know first-hand how the barriers, physical or otherwise, people with disabilities face as well as some of the challenges that care givers have to over come in order to ensure that their loved ones have the best care and attention possible. Everything from attitudes or stereotypes that are deeply rooted in a lack of understanding or misinformation about individuals living with disabilities often makes this journey more difficult for the entire family.

Today, I had to awesome opportunity to spend the afternoon with Miss Atlantic Coast 2012, Becky Albini, at the Easter Seals Adult Day Health Services in New Castle County and my time there was amazing. From Rosie, to Derreck, to Rob (who I've adopted as my new crush) to Lisa the best bingo number caller in the world and a Dallas Cowboys fan but can be forgiven and Lindsay; my heart was warmed by their love and appreciation for our visit.

Taking pictures and playing bingo with center participants was nothing compared to the feeling that we got seeing the smiles on their faces and just talking to them about how much the staff and services mean. I know it may sound cliche but every once in a while, we have experiences in our lives that truly make us remember our blessings and humble our hearts. This was one of those experiences. Thank you A big thank you to Mrs. Gwen Harris, the staff and Easter Seals for being such an exceptional service to our community, family members and this state.
