I had an amazing opportunity to record a Public Service
Announcement for WJBR 99.5 “Focus on Delaware” segment. I was joined by Athena
Clarkin, a fantastic, talented, and educated women’s self-protection expert.
She has been featured on the Discovery Channel and is a wonderful instructor in
this area. We spoke about April being “Sexual Assault Awareness Month” and I
had an opportunity to talk about my platform “Stay Aware, Stay Safe”.
For me, it was very rewarding to bring awareness to my
platform to the Delaware community. In these uncertain times, it is important
that women are really aware of their surroundings, trust their intuition and
make smart decisions. By doing all of these things, you can prevent devastating
situations from occurring. Athena and I spoke about how awareness is a woman’s
#1 weapon in a self-protection situation.
The segment was 27 minutes long and hosted by Charlie Maxx
of WJBR’s Morning Show. I am SO proud of this accomplishment as Mrs. New Castle
County United States, with getting information out to the general public on a
platform that is so important to me. I look forward to more involvement in the
community promoting my platform and educating women on how they can stay aware
and stay safe. Thank you Charlie Maxx and WJBR for this wonderful opportunity
and great experience in the radio recording studio! We had a great time! And a
huge thank you to my friend Athena! I learn a lot each time we get together and
I am so happy that you were a big part of this and were able to share your
knowledge and experiences with others.

Don’t forget that April is Sexual Assault Awareness month.
There are a lot of different resources available in the Delaware area and
nationwide on this topic. Here are 3 of my top resources:
Contact Lifeline: Offers support and resources for Delaware
individuals in crisis
SOAR: Survivors of Abuse: Offers mental health services for
Delaware individuals who have been affected by sexual abuse, regardless of
their ability to pay
RAINN: Rape, Abuse
and Incest National Network: The nation’s largest anti-sexual violence
organization
Please check these websites out for more information on
services and how you can help.
April is going to be a busy month for me, not only because
of Sexual Assault Awareness month, but only one month away from Mrs. Delaware
United States! I am looking forward to it! J
Until next time,
Melissa Kirk
