On Saturday, May 26th, Jackie Young (Mrs. Wilmington) and I had the opportunity to spend the day at Harrington Raceway during Armed Forces Weekend to help the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition (DBCC). The DBCC began in 1991 as a small group of community volunteers, who were committed to decreasing the mortality rate of breast cancer in Delaware. Today, DBCC remains the only organization in the State of Delaware focused solely on breast health issues as they affect the women and men who live here and also serves people in the tri-state area.
Throughout the day, Jackie and I helped to get signatures for a petition that will be presented to Congress along with petitions from 49 other states. The goal of the petition campaign, "End Cancer by 2020", is designed to encourage our elected officials to lobby for more money for cancer research and preventative care and more importantly, a vaccine that will help to eradicate breast cancer. We had the pleasure of talking with a number of residents and what was most touching is that the majority of the folks we talked to had personal stories to share. One young man, Adam told us that he wore a Fight Brain Cancer wristband to support his 7 year old cousin. Adam shared with us that even though his cousin is young that he's a fighter and is fortunate enough to be getting the best care possible at Johns Hopkins University Hospital.
Aside from helping to raise awareness about the DBCC and collect signatures for the petition drive Jackie and I walked around and enjoyed the sites. The actual Armed Forces Weekend was an opportunity to take advantage of the free attractions and pay tribute to the men and women of our Armed Forces and the USO. Even Jackie Young and I were there to support the DBCC; we did get the opportunity to enjoy ourselves and celebrated our military professionals.
We believe both the DBCC and our service personnel deserve support and encouragement and both Jackie and I were glad to be able to be a part of this event.
